Built in 1716, this was originally an outpost designed to guard against Spanish forces moving in to the French Louisiane. Later, after the French lost to the English, the fort came into Spanish control, and was used as a trade center for a few years before it was abandoned. The present site is a replica of the original fort.

The Cane River Heritage area covers 35 mi (56 km) and encompasses Cane River Creole National Historical Park, seven National Historic Landmarks and a number of historic plantations, homes and churches.
