As the oldest permanent settlement in the entire Louisiana Purchase Territory,
Natchitoches attracts visitors with its wealth of historic sites dating back
to the first half of the 18th century. Downtown Natchitoches is a National Landmark
Historic District offering museums, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, art galleries
and antique shops. The 33-square block area features historic churches, commercial
buildings and over 50 homes, providing examples of Queen Anne and Victorian
architecture, as well as Creole-style cottages. In addition to Natchitoches'
historic points of interest, the city is just southwest of the Kisatchie Ranger
District, arguably the most scenic area of Kisatchie National Forest and a haven
for hiking, trail riding, picnicking and camping. Each December, Natchitoches
throws a Christmas festival that illuminates downtown with multi-colored lights
and fireworks displays.
