As the oldest permanent settlement in the entire Louisiana Purchase Territory, Natchitoches attracts visitors with its wealth of historic sites dating back to the first half of the 18th century. Downtown Natchitoches is a National Landmark Historic District offering museums, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, art galleries and antique shops. The 33-square block area features historic churches, commercial buildings and over 50 homes, providing examples of Queen Anne and Victorian architecture, as well as Creole-style cottages. In addition to Natchitoches' historic points of interest, the city is just southwest of the Kisatchie Ranger District, arguably the most scenic area of Kisatchie National Forest and a haven for hiking, trail riding, picnicking and camping. Each December, Natchitoches throws a Christmas festival that illuminates downtown with multi-colored lights and fireworks displays.
